Common Causes for Engine Cranking with No Start — Snohomish Electrical Service

After a full diagnostic of the ignition circuitry (See article: “6 Common No Crank/No Start Problems — Lynwood Automotive Electrical Services“) your Snohomish Electrical Service/Repair technician will likely next check out the Fuel Pump Circuit of your vehicle. Should you be experiencing an ‘engine crank with no start’ issue, chances are the problem is within the fuel circuit:

No Fuel — a simple, yet often overlooked problem is that your car has merely run out of gas. Easy enough to check and remedy. Fill the tank and try starting your car again.

Contaminated Fuel — at times, fuel can be contaminated with water, alcohol or diesel. A fuel system flush may be in order is this is the suspected cause of your car not starting. There are products that can ‘clean’ the fuel, but a thorough inspection is strongly advised!

Plugged/Dirty Fuel Filter — when was your fuel filter last changed? If the filter is clogged, fuel cannot get through — the filter should be inspected/changed with every oil change.

Bad Fuel Pump — if you don’t hear a buzz when you turn the ignition key, chances are your fuel pump is either not working or is not getting power.

Bad Fuel Pump Relay — the relay is powered by the Powertrain Control Module; sending power to the fuel pump during ignition.

Bad Inertia Fuel Shut-Off Switch — a safety measure, this shut-off switch stops fuel from flowing in case of accident. The switch can be tripped from a severe jolt; press the reset button to disengage switch.

Wiring Disruption in Circuit — an opening in the wiring anywhere in the fuel pump circuit will stop the car from getting fuel. This is definitely a diagnosis best left to the experts.

Plugged or Pinched Fuel Lines — a visual inspection of all fuel lines can reveal any pinching; problems with plugged lines might be indicated with a tactile (running fingers over) inspection. Pinched/plugged/broken fuel lines need replacement.

Leaky Fuel Pressure Regulator — fuel pressure is regulated through this valve to the fuel injectors for ignition and proper air/fuel mixture.

Faulty Fuel Injector Relay — responsible for providing power to the fuel injector, if the relay is faulty, the injector cannot operate. Power may be not reaching the relay from the PCM for a variety of reasons; blown fuse, no input signal to PCM or bad PCM drive circuit.

Vacuum Leak — with a vacuum leak, the engine will pull too much air and the fuel/air mix will be too lean for effective combustion. If your car idles extremely rough, chances are you have a major vacuum leak. Leaks can occur at; open EGR valve, disconnected vacuum hose, PCV valve, etc..
